For Celiwe Qikithi, gardening is more than a job. It is a passion that began in childhood, when she worked alongside her grandmother and discovered the joy of planting, nurturing and harvesting food.
Over the years, Celiwe gained valuable experience through community and backyard garden projects. Today, she brings that knowledge and dedication to the Green Project Garden at Chris Hani Educare Centre in Langa.
With support from 7th Sense Travel’s clients, the garden provides fresh produce for the children at the centre, the gardener, local community members in need and the iMzu Youth Centre kitchen. It also introduces young children to the journey their food takes, from planting seeds to harvesting vegetables and fruit.
For Celiwe, every new shoot and harvest is a reminder of what patient care can produce. Her story shows how knowledge passed from one generation to another can continue to grow, nourish others and strengthen an entire community.
